Overview

When I first stepped into the role as a County of Riverside employeee, the county was grappling with a complex project - a homeless count. Our traditional paper-based surveys to count and understand our homeless population were falling short. The data was often fragmented, incomplete, and took an agonizingly long time to process.

Imagine a process, where stacks of paper had to be manually entered into a system, analyzed painstakingly, often yielding data that was weeks old and no longer reflective of the current situation. I realized that if we were to make any significant strides in addressing homelessness, we needed to innovate.

But technology alone wasn't the answer. We needed to ensure that this transition was seamless, that our surveyors were equipped and trained to navigate this new landscape. Workshops, training sessions, community engagements - they became a cornerstone of our transition journey.

With the digital platform, we were now able to gather data in real-time, analyze trends swiftly, and more importantly, respond with strategies that were data-driven and precise. We managed to cut down on administrative costs, and time spent in data management was reduced significantly.

But beyond the numbers, what we achieved was a renewed sense of hope, a belief that with innovation and a forward-thinking approach, we could indeed make a dent in the pressing issue of homelessness.
